Korean female pop group After School

After School is a seven member South Korean female musical group formed in 2009. They are managed by Pledis Entertainment, the same management company of singer. After School originally debuted with five members on January 17, 2009 with their first dance song, Ah.

Pre-Debut

Park Kahi, After School’s leader, had been as a back-up dancer for artists under both SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment, most notably for BoA. She has also been a trainee under JYP Entertainment. Kahi was part of a Korean-American girl group called S.Blush, whose first digital single peaked at #2 at the Billboard Hot Dance Chart. In 2008, Kahi was featured in Bad Boy music video as a rapper, and Kim Jung Ah took part in Son Dambi’s performances as a back-up dancer as part of her training.

Days before After School’s debut, Pledis Entertainment officially announced that the group’s music concept is heavily influenced by the Pussycat Dolls, and that they “will be a type of group that Korea has never seen before”. On January 15, 2009, Pledis Entertainment released a 30-second teaser music video for Ah to the web, which reached 10,000 views on the first day. The girls, as a group, made an unofficial first appearance on December 29, 2008 at the SBS Song Festival ‘S’, performing Play Girlz with Son Dambi.

Debut

After School’s debut single Ah was released with their first EP, “New Schoolgirl,” on January 15, 2009. They made their debut performance on January 17, 2009 on MBC’s music program, Show! Music Core.

In April 2009, it was announced by Pledis Entertainment that UEE ( real name Kim Yoo Jin) would be joining After School as a sixth member. She was first introduced to the public as a friend of Wonder Girls member Kim Yoobin on the television program “Introducing a Star’s Friend,” where they revealed that they were initially part of a five member girl group with Good Entertainment that was eventually disbanded due to financial reasons.

Their second single is Diva, an upbeat dance song. The track was released as their first digital single. Promotional activities began April 9, 2009, with their comeback performance on MNet’s M! Countdown.

On May 21, 2009, After School released a cover of morning musume’s LOVE Machine, titled Dream Girl.

Later on, it was announced that After School would collaborate with the popular Pledis artist . The digital single Amoled was released on July 23, 2009 as part of promotions for Samsung’s phone, “Amoled”.

On October 29, 2009, Yoo So Young announced her withdrawal from the group due to health reasons and the desire to further her education. Subsequently, two new members, Raina ( real name Oh Hye Rin) and Nana ( real name Im Jin Ah) were added, making After School a 7-member group.

After School released their second EP on November 25, 2009, entitled (Because of You). They made their comeback on the 27th on KBS’s Music Bank with their title song . The song proved to be very popular, hitting #1 on various online charts as well as winning three Mutizen awards. A remix version of the single was released on January 22, 2010.

After School 1st Single Album - New Schoolgirl
Produced by : Brave Entertainment
Distributed by : LOEN Entertainment, Inc.
Release Date : 2009.01.15
Tracklists :
01 - Playgirlz [Audio]
02 - Ah [MV || Debut Performances : Music Bank :: Music Core :: Inkigayo]
03 - Bad Guy (나쁜놈) [Audio]
04 - Ah (Inst.)
Reviews :
01 - Playgirlz
This is definitely one of the most upbeat songs that served as a great introduction track for the After School ladies. I really liked how they ‘rapped’ about themselves as ‘five people who know how to play’ and ‘remember us, we’re a new logo’. The choreography was something unique, especially a certain routine between two members which aroused curiosity when it was first showcased in last year’s SBS Gayo. A pity that the song is not the usual 3 minutes long.
02 – Ah
The only full song that is found in this single. This dance track seems to be different from the usual melody that the Brave Brothers would usually produce. Together with their powerful choreography, this creates the unique ‘AS style’ that one has never seen before. After all, we have never seen any group that is able to pull off the sexy vibe just by wearing their ‘in school’ training outfits. This song definitely brings out the charismatic charms of After School, which makes you wanna go “Ah” in admiration like how they would do it in their MV.
03 - Bad Guy
This is a bad-a** track about girls turning nasty towards the guy they had once loved. In fact, it seems like they’re in this resentful mode right from the beginning of the song till the end. Personally, I feel that it’s quite an appropriate song to listen to, especially when you’re mad at someone. After all, we shouldn’t resort to physical means. Instead, we should shift our bitterness and start singing “I’m gonna break your neck so run.” Definitely, I would have hoped that this song wasn’t banned as I was looking forward to see if they would incorporate their anger into their dance routine.

After School 1st Digital Single - Diva
Release Date : 2009.04.09
Tracklists :
01 – Diva [MV || Comeback Performances : M!Countdown :: Music Bank :: Music Core :: Inkigayo]
02 – Diva (MR)
Review :
The Brave Brothers are at it again, this time creating another catchy dance song entitled Diva. Now, the ladies are back, singing a song about professing their love, and claiming that they’re the only ‘Divas’ in the eyes of their man. The melody of the song is sure to be stuck in your minds in the first play, especially the chorus (where it goes “ohneul bam nehil bam…”). Of course, the rhythm changes during Kahi and Beka’s raps, and not forgetting Jungah’s (ballad-styled) bridge. All in all, this song is definitely one of those that you’ll never get tired of, and you might even find yourself screaming, “Diva diva d-d-d-diva” along with them as how Beka would do during their performances.

Digital single – Dream Girl
Artist : After School
Album :대 동경소녀OST
Genre : Dance Pop
Release Date : 2009.05.22
Tracklists :
01 - Dream Girl [MV]
02 – Dream Girl (Inst.)
Review :
Dream Girl is a remake of Morning Musume "Love Machine" song. Besides the Korean lyrics, which talks about realizing your dreams and becoming the star that you’ve always wished to be, there is the “AS touch” to it. This was done so by adding the rap which Beka did towards the end of the song. The MV on the other hand, showcased them in their casual outfits and the things that they did during the recording. In general, it was interesting to see them doing j-pop styled song for a change and this song really helps to brighten one’s day.

Track list :
01 아몰레드 (AMOLED) [MV || MV Making || MV Dance Practice]
02 아몰레드 (AMOLED) (MR)
Reviews :
This was like one of the most anticipated collaborations by fans of both (or either of the) the Pledis artistes. Both the song and the dance had a futuristic feel to it, yet exuding sexy at the same time. Not forgetting the cool move that Kahi did during her part, which definitely ‘wow-ed’ many of us. Apart from the song (which talks about the features of the phone), one would subconsciously start mumbling “Amoled amoled a-a-a-amoled” along with them. Like Diva, this song also had this addictive and repetitive sentence. Heck, even my non kpop friends could remember that sentence after listening to it once. Now that proved the effectiveness of this CF song! In fact, I always forget that it’s just a CF song!

Review :
With the admission of the two new secretive members Raina and Nana, After School is set to change the standards of girl groups. The group revealed their concept of the nation’s first admissions and graduation style that freely rotates and changes their members, attracting great interest through the admission of Uee last April.

Raina (21) and Nana (20) were revealed through their teaser site as individuals that had trained long and hard with “a strong base” that also hold the mysterious image of charm and humor. With the unveiling of the new 7 membered image, many have been showing explosive interest and attraction.

The title song of the new album is “Because of You” It’s said to be a shibuya-kei style song with an electropop feel. After School will be revealing their intensive performance that is said to never been seen before amongst the nation’s girl groups. It begins with the sad melody of a piano and violin that folds into an addictive chrous. A rap that utilizes the members’ individuality finishes the song off in style.

“When I Fall” is a song that member Kahi actually participated in producing. It has a clear melody that fits perfectly into the title of slow R&B. The song is about a girl that begins love by herself and perfectly showcases the charm of After School’s newest member, Raina.

KARA

Senin, 15 Februari 2010

Kara ( often stylized as KARA) is a popular girl group from South Korea. They are under Daesung Entertainment (DSP). Kara comes from the Greek word "chara" (χαρά, lit. "joy"), which the group interpreted to mean "sweet melody".
After losing a member in 2008, Kara regrouped to become a five-member band and eventually
achieved their first number one song with "Honey"

Debut

They debuted as a four-member girl group on March 29, 2007 with "Break It" on M! Countdown. Their first album was called The First Blooming, and they debuted with the mature, independent, "strong-female" image and they focused on singing and music, instead of appearing on variety shows. They made two music videos from this album: "Break It" and "If U Wanna". Promotions ended in the summer of 2007.
Because of their similarity to Fin.K.L and the fact that both were under the same company, the two were often compared; in response, Kara stated that they wanted to work hard enough to deserve the comparison.

New Members, Image Change, and Comeback

The group intended their comeback in March 2008 with their second album. However, Sung-hee left the group suddenly due to parental pressure, as her participation in the group was contingent on the maintenance of her grades. She failed to pass her college entrance exam, and was forced to leave the group. In response, DSP stated that the second album would be shelved and replaced by a mini-album to come in May; in addition, two members would join the group, chosen through public auditions, to be chronicled by music television station
However, this show was canceled the day it was supposed to air.
The two new members were eventually revealed to be Goo Hara and Kang Jiyoung. KARA's comeback as a 5-member group was on July 24, 2008 with "Rock U" on M! Countdown. They made their comeback with the "cute" and "playful" image. In the same month, their first EP was released. After promotions for the song ended, Kara digitally released "Good Day: Season 2", a remake of a song on their EP, on October 13, 2008. A music video of this song was released a few days after.

Second mini-album

"Pretty Girl"

On November 29, 2008, DSP Entertainment released a teaser video for their upcoming single, "Pretty Girl", which received over 40,000 hits within 12 hours. while the EP was released on December 4. The mini-album is supposed to have a "party/fun" concept. The group began its comeback on all major music shows on December 4, 2008, starting with M.Net Countdown. During their first national performance on KBS's Music Bank, member Goo Hara accidentally slipped due to falling confetti and accidentally said "Ah" in the middle of the performance and cried for an hour backstage.Netizens made it a "hot issue", but Goo Hara received comfort instead of criticism from the public.
Leader Park Gyuri attributed their popularity increase to their "pretty but natural" appeal, while media reports gave credit to the band finding their own identity and to older male fans, most notably singer Shin Hae-cheol.
Due to the hectic promotional schedule, a few of the group's members were taken to the hospital on December 19 after a KBS Music Bank rehearsal, but a DSP representative said that it was not serious.[14]

"Honey" and Kara's First #1 Single

At the end of January 2009, DSP Entertainment announced that it would commence voting on January 28 at Kara's official website for the follow-up single to "Pretty Girl", which would end on February 2. By the deadline of February 2, "Honey" was the clear winner, with 60% of the votes. The group filmed a music video for the song, which was released on February 16. The song was also first performed on KBS's Music Bank program on February 13, 2009; a repackaged mini-album followed on February 19.[15][16]
"Honey" became the group's first #1 single when it topped the M.Net M! Countdown show, beating out Girls' Generation's "Gee" for the spot. The song also won the "Mutizen" ("music netizen") award on SBS's program The Music Trend.
The group did its last round of promotional activities for this album on April 10–12, 2009.

Mid-2009 comeback with Revolution

Revolution was revealed in June that the group would return in late July 2009, with their concept to be "upgraded". The first teaser pictures of the group were then released in mid-July, showing radical changes in the group's style.
Their single "Wanna" was released on July 28, 2009. The song quickly charted on various digital music charts. The music video was released on July 29, with the full album being available on July 30.Comeback activities commenced on July 31, beginning with KBS's Music Bank; the group performed both "Wanna" and "Mister"."Mister" proved to be popular with netizens due to a "butt dance" that is featured prominently in the choreography.Due to the popularity of the song, Kara's overall popularity increased, with numerous advertisement requests coming in for the group; they had more advertisements in October 2009 than the previous two years.
On August 30, 2009, "Wanna" won the "Mutizen Song" award from SBS's Inkigayo music program.

2010: Return with third mini-album "Lupin"

DSP Media released two teaser photos of Kara's comeback concept on February 9, 2010. The photos garnered a lot of interest because compared to their past album concepts, the new photos displayed a more mature, dark and mysterious Kara. The next day, the album jacket was unveiled with the concept being called "Stealer" and the title track named "Lupin". The teaser video was released on February 12 on Naver; the mini-album is scheduled to be released on February 17. It has been confirmed that Kara will have their comeback starting on February 25, 2010 on M! Countdown.

Goo Hara was born and raised in Gwangju (광주; 光州). She was an online shopping mall model before debuting, having been scouted after her photos were uploaded onto DSP's homepage. In late 2008, she appeared along with the other Kara members (excluding Seungyeon) in an episode of MBC sitcom That Person is Coming, having the most prominent role as a female gang leader.
In October 2009, she became a cast member in KBS 2TV reality show "청춘불패" ("Invincible Youth"). She also joined MBC's Hunters, along with SS501's Kim Hyun Joong, Jung Yong Hwa, Lee Hwi Jae, Shin Jung Hwan and two professional hunters to catch overpopulated wild boars that have become a dangerous threat to people and crops. The first episode aired on December 6, 2009.[48] However, due to complaints about animal rights after the first episode, the show's format was quickly changed to concern about global climate change, and the show was renamed Eco House; Goo Hara does not appear in the new show.
